World Carbon Conference 2009

World Carbon Conference 2009
Seizing the Early Signs of Economic Recovery and Onward to the Post-2012 Carbon World
13–16 October 2009 · Sofitel Wanda Beijing (tbc), Beijing, China

The global carbon market surpassed the US$100 billion mark last year to reach a total volume of $126.3 billion, according to the World Bank. Despite significant selling by companies looking for cash in this time of tight liquidity, the market continues to astound in its potential for growth.

Major challenges now include maintaining and maximising production from existing carbon project portfolios, as well as actively managing projects under contract toward issuance. Developers have to contend with massive project delays and the difficult project financing environment to push initiatives through, adding to the lack of post-2012 regulatory and price signals as key challenges to the market.

However outfits like the Center for Energy Sustainability and Economics in Singapore are hopeful that these challenges can be solved to pave the way for a $1 trillion global carbon market by 2010, through early post-2012 regulatory signals from key regulators in Europe, America and China, as well as continued growth in project hosting by Least Developed Countries such as in Africa.

The CESE is launching a programme to find effective solutions to the challenges facing the world carbon market: the World Carbon Conference 2009, to be held in Beijing from 13th–16th October. The 4-day summit promises to be the #1 place this year to meet international and major national regulators as well as the global market’s biggest players in an intimate setting of only 150-200 delegates. Participants will pick up early updates on the post-2012 emissions treaty negotiations, together with a case study exchange and interactive workshop on managing, minimising and avoiding project delays while maximising production from carbon offset projects around the world.

“Gathering together both the world’s biggest and newest project developers, carbon funds, regulators and DNAs, end-buyers, project hosts, ETS operators and DOEs is not easy, but we’re sure to do it just like the last two times I did this,” says CESE director Rex Ian Sayson. “Delegates can expect an unrivalled 4-day platform to ride the wave of the expected Q3 recovery and also get a good headstart on the post-2012 regulatory signals expected in the next few months.”
